About the MSIT

Curriculum

The curriculum of the M.S. in Information Technology— 70% technical, 30% business—gives you practical knowledge that you can apply immediately to your work—knowledge that is essential to making smart IT decisions. With a primary emphasis on technical subjects like electrical engineering, telecommunications, and computer science, our curriculum explores not only the latest in technology, but also the engineering principles that underlie all technology. The inclusion of business and management topics enables you to make the best use of technology to meet business goals.

Part-Time Program

First Year Curriculum
In the first year of our program, students will explore the fundamentals of telecommunications engineering and computer and information technology, learn concepts behind networks and learn how to evaluate technologies and their operations using probability and statistics.  Students will also start to build a business foundation with financial management and learn how to effectively data mine to make intelligent business decisions.

Second Year Curriculum
In the second year, students will explore more advanced technical material in wireless technologies and information security while expanding their business context through courses in management, marketing, law, innovation and strategy integration courses.

Independent Study
Students may choose to pursue an independent study in place of up to two regular courses. Students with extensive knowledge in a particular area covered in the MSIT may wish to study a separate topic or to conduct more advanced research in that area, under the supervision of an MSIT faculty member.

Full-Time Program

Four courses per quarter will be taken - 2 from EECS department course offerings (300 level or above), which are held on weekdays - and 2 from the “regular” Saturday MSIT offerings (described in the above links).   Here are the links to EECS course descriptions and course schedules. There are two potential tracks to pursue within the full-time program: one more computer science oriented and one more electrical engineering oriented.  Note: there is room for exceptions and potential independent studies based on one’s background, interests, and career goals.  Admitted students will work closely with an assigned faculty advisor to set up an approved study plan.  More at:  http://www.infotech.northwestern.edu/fulltime.shtml
